Did you know the first 5-10 minutes of your playing session sets the upper limits on what you’ll achieve in your entire
playing session?
When you are short on playing time, this crucial 5-10 minute window is even more important!
But how do most guitarists start their practice sessions?
Guitarists do one of two things.
Most, just pick up their guitar and start playing songs.
Now hang on a second…that’s the reason you decided to play guitar in the first place isn’t it? So what could possibly
be wrong with that?
Well, the problem is that most songs are not designed to properly warm-up your hands.
A Hidden Reason for Slow Improvement on Guitar
Have you ever thought about the fact that songs do not use all fingers equally? Pick any two songs and count how
many times each finger is used. Do this, and you’ll find that your fingers are used differently in every song.
This means that depending on the songs you play, one or more of your fingers may be neglected.
The BIG Problem
Over several practice sessions, this often leads to a big problem I frequently find among guitarists---one or two
fingers are much weaker than the rest.
This means songs that use your weak fingers will take way more time to learn and will be much harder to play than
they should be.
What About the Other Thing Guitarists Do?
The other way that guitarists start a practice session, is by doing some sort of a “warm-up”. What’s considered to
be a warm-up varies widely from player to player. Unfortunately, most guitarists do not warm-up correctly. They
usually miss crucial things, or do things in the wrong order. This means they are not warming up effectively and
ultimately end up wasting much of their valuable practice time.
Everyone Knows What a Warm-up is Supposed to Do, or Do They?
A warm-up allows your body and mind to perform at an optimal level and prevent injury.
Think for a moment about what is required when you play the guitar…
Think of all of the fine motor skills that are required…
There are 34 muscles that move the fingers and thumb-17 in the palm and 18 in the forearm. And that’s not
counting the muscles in your upper arm, shoulders, back and neck!
A Recipe for Disaster
You would never think about going to the gym, grabbing the heaviest weight you could ever lift, and lifting with no
warm-up, would you? No way!
You know that’s a recipe for disaster. When you don’t warm-up in the gym you run the risk of injury.
It’s the same on guitar. When you don’t warm-up properly on guitar, you also run the risk of injury.
The Mind…A Terrible Thing to Waste Especially for Guitar
The other neglected part of the warm-up is the mind.
When you pick up your guitar to play, are you always instantly absorbed with 100% concentration?
Or, does it take a bit of playing to get your mind away from work or school?
And what about those days when you just can’t seem to get your mind on your playing?
When your mind is distracted and thinking of other things, do you really think you are in the best state for learning
and improving your playing?

The 2 Biggest Problems with Most Guitar Methods
Typical guitar lessons and online guitar courses cover chords, scales, songs and maybe a bit of theory. But, rarely do they ever show
you how to practice for maximum results.
Since most guitar players don’t know how to practice for maximum results, those that teach can only teach what they know, so their

How I Stumbled Across the Secrets to Learning Guitar Fast
When I first started to play guitar, I did what everyone else did. I worked on songs, learned some chords and a few scales.
After I learned to play my first few songs, I was hooked. I decided that I wanted to play extremely well.
I started to look carefully at what I was practicing and how I was practicing.
I started to experiment with what I practiced and how I practiced.
Eventually, through a ton of trial-and-error, I developed my practice system.
Pretty quickly, I became established as one of the top guitarists in my high school. This was even though some of the others had
been playing for five or six years while I had only been playing for about a year and a half.
I never really thought much about how I got my guitar chops until I was out of high school. One day while I was in music college, ten
guitarists got together and started to talk "shop"…
Out of the 10 guitarists, 8 are good solid players; 2 are exceptional players.
One of the 8 asks the other 2:
"Why is it that you two have been playing as long as the rest of us, yet you can absolutely play circles around us?"
My buddy Paul and I looked at each other with an "hmm" look.
"I don't know." I said looking at my good friend.
My first thought was that we must practice harder and longer than the other players. As I was about to ask the question, Paul beat
me to it. He asked the others, "How long do you practice each day?"

On average, they were practicing the same amount of time as Paul and I were!
Okay, that totally blew my answer out of the water.
Now, I was starting to get really curious.
What could it be? I thought for a while longer, and when nothing else came to mind, I just blurted out, "How do you practice?"
The first answer came in from Mike.
Next Brian answered, and then the others one by one.
A pattern quickly emerged.
Although Paul and I practiced slightly different things, we still covered the same areas every practice session and followed a very
specific practice system.
Even though they were practicing as much as we were, the other guitarists were not practicing the same things as we were. Also,
they didn't really have a system for practicing. They would practice a bit of this and a bit of that.
A Total Eye-Opener
This was a real eye-opener for all of us. Standing in front of us was clear evidence that shows it's not how long you practice, or how
long you've been playing that really matters, it really comes down to how you practice and what you practice.
I urge you to let this sink in for a minute...
The most important thing that determines how fast you'll advance on the guitar is not the total time you practice, but what you
practice and how you practice.
In other words, what matters most is how you use your practice time!
If you take a random approach to practicing, you will get hit-and-miss results. Imagine going to the gym and doing some bench
presses. Then you hit the pool and do some laps. Next, you do biceps curls, hit the steam-room, do a full-out sprint, hit the treadmill
3 hours and then....
First of all, you’ll be lucky to get out of the gym alive. Second, by taking such a random (and dangerous) approach you minimize any
benefits you would get from the workout.
The same is true of music:
IF YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO PRACTICE, YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME AND SABOTAGING YOUR RESULTS.
The Test
I was really eager to put this concept to the test. Since I was teaching 40-50 guitar students a week, I decided that I would see
what results my students would get.
That evening I started to teach my guitar students the system.
It's funny. Up until that point, I had never thought I needed to teach this because I just assumed that everyone was taking a similar
approach to practicing. It seemed too obvious to me.
The Results Speak for Themselves...
Every student that used the system got good results and some got great results. Some students mastered most or all of the material
I had given them in their previous lesson.
Other students mastered everything, and had gone on to do much more.
It was great! I could hear consistent improvement in their playing each week. This worked with beginners, intermediate and
advanced players.
The One "Catch"
There were those students that didn't follow the practice system. Their progress was slow at best. Sometimes they would hardly
remember what was covered in the previous lesson. I would go over the practice formula again and ask if they would just give it a
try. Some never would. Others would give it a shot. When they did try the formula, we could both hear improvements in their
playing.
There's a great proverb that says:
"A teacher can open a door, but it's up to you to enter.”
So here is the one "catch" to the system: you have to use it! It's really that simple. If you don't use it, you won't get the results.
If you practice in an unfocused or haphazard way, you will get hit-and-miss results. For your playing to progress and improve

Fantastic Book!!! I haven't had time to go through the whole book yet,
but here's what I can say...
I now understand where all the notes on the fretboard are, and they are
taught in such a way that it was easy to understand. I can now put my
fingers down anywhere on the guitar and know immediately what note I am
playing. I have learned the patterns to where all the different notes fall on
each string, and it is not confusing at all. Learning something as simple as
that has helped me understand and make sense of things that were
otherwise very confusing.
I also like the way that the scales have been explained. Learning what the
major and minor scales are and how to apply them has also helped
tremendously.
